STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION WORKSHOP
  Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) organized a stakeholder consultation workshop on "Amendment of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029" on 5th Bhadra 2064 in Kathmandu. Over 40 participants from Government and Non Governmental Organizations participated in the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to solicit suggestions, comments and concerns from concerned stakeholders on the amendment of the NPWC Act. Mr. Phanindra Gautam, Legal Officer (Under Secretary) of Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation gave presentation on various issues and concerns that needs to be discussed. The workshop discussed the insufficiencies and amendments needed in the Act. Almost all participants took part in the discussion. The suggestions were came on different aspects including framing of new Act, recognition of community based conservation, defining clear role and responsibilities of local people, incorporation of management and species conservation action plan, Ramsar sites and important bird areas conservation, facilitating scientific research, making clear investigation procedures, compensation to wildlife victims, augmenting protection systems, wildlife rehabilitation and rescue centre, reward system to informers, fines and penalties, priority development projects in protected areas, amendments in appendix, tourism management, medicinal plants collection and use, bidding of confiscated items, trophy disposal, local self governance act provisions, captive breeding, mountaineering fees and so on and so forth. At the end of the workshop, Mr. Shyam Bajimaya, Officiating Director General of DNPWC extended vote of thanks to all participants and stated that the participation and cooperation of all stakeholders is highly appreciated. He further said that the suggestions and concerns raised over here will be useful in amending/formulating new conservation laws in the country. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Phanindra Gautam of MFSC and Mr. Jhamak B Karki of DNPWC. The event was supported by WWF Nepal.
