International Tiger Symposium and the IV General Assembly of Global Tiger Forum concluded |

The tiger, throughout its range on this planet, is facing problems and is endangered. With it is threatened the habitats of rich biodiversity, which are vital for maintaining ecological integrity and life support system as well as for sustenance to local communities. Much has been done towards conservation of tiger but much more remains to be done, if the tiger is to survive. The International Tiger Symposium (ITS) and the fourth General Assembly of Global Tiger Forum (GTF) was held at Kathmandu, Nepal between 16th and 20th April 2007. Government delegates from 12 tiger range countries, Government of UK and many conservationists and representatives of I/NGO world over attended the symposium and assembly. Twenty papers were presented on the symposium. The first general Assembly was held at Dhaka, Bangladesh in January 2000, the second was held at New Delhi, India in November 2000 and the third General Assembly was held at Hanoi, Vietnam in Novemeber 2004. India hold the post of chairperson of GTF between 1994 and 1999. Bangladesh took over as the chairperson of GTF in January 2000 and also re-elected as chairperson for second term. Nepal took over as chairperson of GTF in the third General Assembly, which took place in Hanoi, Vietnam in November 2004. Nepa re-elected as chairperson, GTF for second term during the fourth General Assembly held at Nepal in April 2007. The members of GTF elected from the General Assembly that Nepal as the chairmen of the executive committee for the next three years, as per the statutes of GTF. Other members of the committee decided on the Assembly are India, Bangladesh and Vietnam (from Tiger range countries), UK (Non tiger range countries) and WWF International from international NGOs. ITS and GTF General Assembly was organized to take stock of the Tiger conservation situation in the wild world over for adopting appropriate strategies to ensure its future. The ITS was inaugurated by the Honorable Speaker of the Legislative Parliament Mr Subash Nembang and the fourth General Assembly was opened by the Honorable NMinister for Forests and Soil Conservation and Chairperson of Global Tiger Forum Mr. Matrika Prasad Yadav. |
