Terai Arc Landscape
Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) is a long-term vision – 50 years and encompasses an area of 49,500 sq.km from Bagmati River in Nepal to Yamuna River in India. It is a biologically diverse habitat with 86 spp of mammals, 550 spp birds, 47 species of herpetofauna, 126 spp of fish and over 2100 spp flowering plants. In Nepal TAL extends from Bagmati river in the east to Mahakali river in the west and cover 14 districts and includes over 75% of the remaining lowland forests of the Terai and foothills of the Churia. TAL is not only a critical habitat for biodiversity, it is a home for 6.5 million people who dependent on its resources for their livelihood. TAL includes 11 PAs - 4 in Nepal: Parsa Wildlife Reserve, Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park, Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve and 7 protected areas in India. Focus in the critical corridors like Basanta, and Khata . Three bottlenecks are identified in Nepal: Mahadevpuri, Lamahi, Dovan. Major activities undertaken include: forest restoration, maintain high biological diversity, ensure the continued provision of key ecological services, facilitate gene flow dispersal between wild population, and livelihoods improvement. These activities are incorporated under five thematic areas- Sustainable forest management, species and ecosystem conservation, sustainable livelihoods, conservation education and coordination and monitoring.
